Probably is the most offensive of invectives one can say and hear in the Filipino language.
It denotes great rage when being used as an expression. It denotes offensive emphasis when injected into sentences. Tangina is its lesser variant.
When directed to somebody, the words turn into knives that cut through that somebody’s heart. The more the valuable the person saying that to you is, the more pain those words can inflict upon you. That is why when the girl I loved the most said, “Putang ina mo, lubayan mo na ako.”, I became scarred for the rest of my life.
Well, putting that aside,
A combination of the Spanish word “puta” which means “whore” and “ina” which means “mother” in many of the Malay-Polynesian languages.
Why it has to be in such combination?
The word Filipinos revered the most.
The word that represents all of our mothers to whom we owe our lives by bringing us into this world.
The word that represents the matriarchal orientation of our society, or so I say, the pre-colonial society.
The word that we use when addressing our motherland, Inang Bayan.
A word that demeans women.
A word that reeks of patriarchy.
A word that represented the colonialism that subjugated our Inang Bayan. With every customer that she got came pillaging of towns, depopulation of islands, the removal of our sense of identity, and our foolish and continuing subordination towards other nations.
Why did Ina sold herself to prostitution?
Because they do nothing.
Why her sons are letting her be violated by men, nations that took away her freedom?
Because all that matters to them are their own freedom, or what thought as freedom.
Why her sons are letting her undergo the same treatment again under murderous and ambitious dictators?
Because her sons are forgetful ignorant people who don’t know their history.
Why are her sons letting her pieces be sold off one by one, especially now with many of her islands being sold off to superpowers like China and the USA?
Because what matters to them are their own belongings.
Why are her sons leaving her ailing, with her organs…or institutions that maintain her well-being,… being induced to debilitate?
Because they only care for their personal interests.
Why are her sons letting her be drowned in such shame?
Because her sons are shameless to begin with.
Where are her sons?
They’re there. They just don’t care.
As long as we do nothing, our Inang Bayan will forever remain a Putang ina, you son of a bitch.
